Taking the Dance Class Outdoors

Dance classes provide children a fantastic opportunity to learn more about themselves by artistically expressing how they feel. Although the basic dance techniques do require discipline and a pinch of seriousness, instructors have to keep the children in mind. The younger your class is, the shorter their attention span would be.

Below are some tips on bringing your dance class outdoors, to help you rise above the challenge of maintaining balance between fun and actual learning.

1. A new environment refreshes inspiration

The public playground is a convenient and accessible location where you can bring your dance class. You can also take this opportunity to have the children’s parents tag along and sit in for this particular class.

The absence of walls and bars, combined with the abundance of space and nature, will allow good form to naturally kick in. Point this out to them and commend them, so they’ll bring it back to the studio for the succeeding sessions.

2. Children are encouraged to think out of the box

Although the public playground is something familiar to most kids in your class, they’ll find new appreciation for their favorite playground spots.

To make your outdoor class more interesting, you can have them play follow the leader (with you, leading) over the playground equipment to practice grace and form as you move and flow through the objects.

Later, you can suggest follow the leader as a way for parents to show interest in their child’s dancing. All they have to do is take their child to the playground regularly and play follow the leader with them.

3. Safety

Most public playgrounds all over the United States are fitted with rubber mulch flooring. This prevents impact-related injuries and allows parents and guardians to easily spot dangerous objects like broken glass. Make sure you check out your neighborhood playground first before taking your class out.
