A Playground for Oldies
Few people are aware that playgrounds are not exclusively for kids anymore. Now, playgrounds are becoming more popular because the concept has been revolutionized to cater to senior citizens.
The idea of a seniors’ playground is brilliant. Not only is the community brought together, older people, specifically those 60 years old and above, are encouraged to exercise and meet with their peers.
In fact, a research conducted in the University of Lapland, Finland reveals that older people who go to playgrounds build muscle, reduce fat, and improve their coordination, speed, and balance. Having fun is the objective, and because the children’s playground is nearby, it becomes easier for grandmas and grandpas to check on their grandchildren.
Keeping the equipment simple and gentle
There is, however, a marked difference between a playground for kids and that for seniors. While the former houses slides and such other pieces of equipment to cater to hyperactive kids, the latter’s playground contains simple and gentle equipment. The equipment installed is designed to exercise a part of the body. An example is the skate machine, which trains leg muscles and strengthens hip muscles. There is also equipment for static-cycling. The machines are user-friendly and offer little chances for injury. Some pieces of equipment are accessible to wheelchair users. Some also come in bright colors, as these colors tend to make people happier and more energetic.
Safety is the primary consideration
Seniors’ playgrounds are designed to be safe for older people. Thus, a lot of these playgrounds utilize rubber mulch not only to pad rough edges, but also to provide cushions on the floor, just in case someone falls or trips. The extra protection provided by the rubber mulch makes these unique playgrounds safer for all visitors.
Not only are the playgrounds lined with rubber mulch, it’s not surprising to see rubber mulch being incorporated in the surrounding areas, as well. When the landscaping matches the theme of the playground, it is said that it becomes easier for those who are there to feel comfortable and at ease.
