My Playground Experience as a Child

As every 8 year old, I thought I was an aerobatic genius on the climbing frame. This was until, whilst hanging upside down my legs slipped, I fell off banging my head on the cold, hard concrete ground below.

I got up, shook myself off, checked that not too many people had seen me and took a few steps and passed out cold. I woke up to ‘is he still alive?’

I think it was only a matter of seconds that I was out for the count and I didn’t go to the doctor for a check up or anything. Maybe I should of; I might have lost the few brain cells that would have made me the next Einstein.

Anyway, this was just a mild playground accident.

I’m sure you have heard of or known of a lot worse accidents with broken bones or a lot of blood. (When I was 4 I fell off a see-saw and had to have stitches in my chin, that bled a lot – not that I’m accident prone or anything!)

It is a worrying experience for any parent.

When you look at the statistics, there are more then 550,000 children that end up in the emergency room because of playground antics. And no doubt many more like me with mild accidents.

Nowadays, though, there is this new playground surface called rubber mulch. This rubber mulch can be used as the surface around climbing frames, slides, swings or anything you can fall off or fall down on.

Obviously this type of surface is soft and rubbery, protecting the future aerobatic antics of the kids among us from the hard knocks, shocks, breaks and blood that other playground surfaces do not prevent.

If you have playground near you, don’t you think it should have this kind of surface? For more information on this ideal playground surfacing, please visit Rubber Recycle
