Another Victory for Rubber Mulch in the Playground
Being such an advocate of rubber mulch, I am really happy to read success stories about rubber mulch applications. I came across one such story today entitled ‘Blue Mulch, Green Park’ about the first playground in the city of Corpus Christi to have rubber mulch installed.
The Kid’s Place playground is the first playground to switch from wood mulch to rubber mulch in a move to becoming a greener city. This is fully backed by the Corpus Christi Career Development Class 2008, who have created community projects to make their city greener. It was twenty volunteers from this class who spread the 62 tons of rubber mulch needed to create this safer and greener playground.
Although the cost of rubber mulch is almost twice that of wooden mulch, it is recognized that it will save them money it the long run, as wooden mulch needs to be replaced every couple of years, whereas rubber mulch lasts for up to fifteen years. Also it is more weather resistant than wooden mulch and less likely to have rodents nesting in it.
The community can rest safe in the in the knowledge that they have helped the environment, because instead of hundred of tires ending up on a landfill, they have been shredded to create this rubber mulch suitable for playground use.
Not only does the blue color rubber mulch, look fun and appealing to children, it is a lot safer than wooden mulch as well, as it provides a much better cushion than wooden mulch ever could, and will help prevent accidents in the playground.
It is my opinion that cities, governors and mayors thinking about upgrading playgrounds should look at these success stories and the merits of using rubber mulch as a safe and eco-friendly playground surfacing very carefully.
